<span style="font-family: "calibri";">I had been seeing them all over the internet for weeks, misshaped
carrots and potatoes with googly eyes staring back at me from the ads for
Imperfect Produce. Though the concept intrigued
me, selling produce that was not perfect at a discount to keep it from the
dumpster, I didn’t jump on the idea at first.
I was not sure about the cost and if it would be cheaper than how I
already bought produce; here and there, paying attention to sales and discounts
and I didn’t know if it would fulfill our produce needs. We are a fresh food heavy house. I am often
buying six red peppers at a time to keep up with the kids’ intake as well as
pounds of apples, onions, celery, and carrots.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">Back in May, I decided to see if this would work for my
family. I really liked the concept and
wanted to help keep perfectly good food from going to waste. I was sure the Imperfect box would not keep
up with all of our vegetation needs, especially since they are working with
what they have not what I need, but I knew I could cancel if it didn’t work. To start out I ordered a medium box. It was
easy to sign up and I was informed my delivery day was Wednesday. Wednesday came and the kids and I were
excited to see what came in the box. We received
a pound each of apples, carrots, lemons, onions, and potatoes along with pears,
oranges, corn, cauliflower, tomatoes, cucumbers, and avocadoes. It was fun to open the box and see so much
delicious food inside. The box was just under $20 including a $4.99 delivery
charge. Since the delivery charge is the
same no matter the box size, I upped our order to the extra-large box for our
next order, excited to receive an even larger selection of produce. We receive an extra-large box every week,
which averages around $30 and fulfills most of our produce needs.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">Getting a box of random produce is great for our family. I am more creative in the kitchen, changing
recipes around to work with what I have, and I get to eat vegetables that I
often will not buy either due to price or because I know I am the only one who
will eat them. Imperfect Produce does
offer the ability to customize what fruits and vegetables come in your box; so,
if you absolutely hate Brussel sprouts, you don’t have to have them in your
house. For our house, we customize to balance
our vegetable consumption with our box (we had a plethora of carrots there for
a while) and nixing things like parsley and kale that grow readily in our
kitchen garden or zucchini and limes which will not be eaten. Beyond that, I like keeping the assortment as
is, making chocolate zucchini bread when we had a zucchini that disguised
itself as a cucumber, radish potato soup when I found out you can cook
radishes, or cooking with natures sugary little treats to make honey date
walnut scones.

<span style="font-family: "calibri";">How ugly is the produce?
Not very in all honesty. Some of
it is surplus, other pieces have minor imperfections or the size is too large
or too small. We have had a few bruised
peaches, and some cucumbers that we needed to eat faster than we were prepared
for, but not anything that is all that different from buying food from the
grocery store. My daughter loves the
variety of fruit we have in the house now (not just apples), and my son is
excited about new vegetables like beets and Brussel sprouts. I am curious to see how the box will change
as we progress through the year. Our grocery bill has seen a slight decrease,
probably more due to being creative in the kitchen, but I’ll take it.

I am a night owl. I am a morning person. You can have your afternoon though. My brain ceases to function between about 2 and 4 pm. It just sits at a continual "duh" and I feel like I cannot accomplish any task. By the time it kicks into gear, it is 5pm and I have to make dinner. I don't get to sit down again until after 8pm.

I know there will be a day, when my artistic pursuits will be allowed to take the driver's seat. I know that I have to be patient. To trust myself and the universe and keep pulling myself along.
I'm in a cleaning phase right now. Cleaning out old clothes, old dishes, old books, and old ideas. Scrapping projects that didn't work an make space for new ideas.

In the middle of this I picked up the KonMari method book from the library, but for the most part it is what I do yearly anyway. I am not the untidy person. Teaching my kids to be tidy is a-whole-nother story.

There are two reasons I cannot embrace this tidying method with vigor. One, is that I am an amateur librarian and cannot part with books that at some point, may be useful, and two is that I create art from found objects, so you never know when that big bin of cork is going to come in handy, or that broken whisk, or all those motherboards that I scrapped out of laptops a couple years ago. It is really hard to part with things that are potential art supplies.

But I live in a small house, with 4+ other people, and I am drowning a bit in potential art and not making nearly enough actual art.

But speaking of actual art, if you are in the Tacoma area on Saturday, I will have my booth set up in conjunction with my neighborhood yard sale.

There is a quote, saying, what have you, that says

"People don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it."

These last couple of years, I have not had a cohesive vision for why I create my art. There is this random need to turn small pieces into something new and different, but the fleeting inspiration is unfulfilling. With munchkins underfoot who are also randomly creative beings, my creativity lacks discipline and study. This is not going to change for the time being. My munchkins are still young, and though they require less hands on attention than they did when they were toddlers, they are still drawing from my reserves.

What I can do is accept the patterns of my art. I can accept that my world is themed around nature. I can accept the branches, flowers, seed pods, and rocks that are the keystone to my creative ability.

Keep an eye out for more posts in the coming weeks, more shows in the coming months, more jewelry and other such creative fruits this year.

She wanted an egg, without the yolk, my youngest daughter was being specific and stubborn. I just wanted her to eat some protein. I gave in, and separated the yolk from the white. The white was fried up and served, but what to do with the yolk? Mayonnaise.

Mayonnaise is either a condiment that you hate, or just kinda use. Most mayonnaise is bland and acts as a moistening agent for otherwise dry sandwiches. I have always been a big fan of mayonnaise on sandwiches, but I gave up buying mayonnaise quite a few years ago because I didn't care for the ingredients, the cost, or that fact that it didn't get used all that often, so it just sat in the fridge.

Over the years I have tried my hand at making mayonnaise. A whisk in the one hand beating furiously at the egg yolk and the measuring cup of oil pouring a subtle stream into the bowl with the other. Normally too much work for something that was going to go bad within a few days according to the recipes.

I was stuck with what to do with this solitary egg yolk. Another attempt at mayonnaise was the end result. This time I used my mini prep, a scaled down version of a food processor. Why hadn't I used the mini prep before? Because I neglected to see the holes in the top used for the oil..

Into the bowl went the egg yolk, a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lemon juice. I closed the lid and started blending while pouring a oil into the top of the unit for it to drizzle into the emulsion below. I didn't measure my oil, most recipes say 1 cup oil to 1 egg yolk. I know I didn't use a full cup, it was the end of the bottle. I finished it off with a bit of wine vinegar and then put it in the fridge to meld. It is exactly what mayonnaise should be: simple, subtle, and tasty.

Mayonnaise
1 egg yolk
dash of salt
squeeze of lemon
1/2-1 cup oil (I used EV Olive)
wine vinegar to taste

It is your mayonnaise so use the flavor components to taste, even the oil in my opinion. The main point behind mayonnaise is to create an emulsion with the yolk and oil, which means combining them steadily and slowly. The mini prep, or food processor, is an easy and consistent way to do this, though you can do it with a whisk.

Give it a try and let me know how it turned out.
I love creating jewelry with purple and green.

Every time I pair the colors together I am reminded of a friend who loved to where a purple t-shirt with dark green jeans. I looked at him quizzically and told him purple and green do not go together, but he most rightly informed me that the colors where complimentary and did, in fact, work well together. Though I am still unsure of my friend's choice in attire, I do have to agree that I love the color combination.

When you are a kid, pictures with your parents are inevitable. They are around you all the time and even a simple get together can bring the opportunity for a candid snap of you hugging your mother or talking with your father. As you walk your way into adulthood and have your own family or move away to pursue your life, those candid shots become fewer, and sometimes just stop. Then one day, you are thinking back, realizing that you do not have any photographs of you as an adult with your parents.

With Father's Day approaching, and Mother's Day just a few weeks past, I started to muse about those precious photographs of children with their parents and realized that I have very few. I have photographs of them, of them with the grandkids, but I want some photographs to put on the family wall to remember them as they are now.

I am not the biggest fan of having my photograph taken, silly, I know, and for the most part, I do not exist in the captured history of my family. I think memories need a little help sometimes, and photographs are a great way to give them a boost. In that vein, my goal in the next few months is to take portraits with my parents. Maybe I'll let the grandkids join in on a few.

If this sounds like a good idea, but you need some help in the photography department, contact me and book a portrait appointment. I would love to help you capture this memory.

Best wishes,

A long time ago there was a product I used to buy that I used on every boo boo in the house, whether it was the kids or the adults. but as the years went one, this ointment was harder and harder to find. Me being me, I knew that I could come up with a formula that would work just as well, be homemade, and under my control.

This is Green Stuff. Great for bruises, cuts, burns, etc. It helps injuries heal faster and keeps things from getting infect. At least in our house it does.
<span style="color: #c00000; font-family: "Garamond",serif; font-size: 12pt;">2 parts comfrey root powder

<span style="color: #c00000; font-family: "Garamond",serif; font-size: 12pt;">-Soak above mixture in 2x volume of olive oil for 3-4 weeks.

<span style="color: #c00000; font-family: "Garamond",serif; font-size: 12pt;">

<span style="color: #c00000; font-family: "Garamond",serif; font-size: 12pt;">After the oil is finished being infused, strain through fine
muslin into a saucepan and add 2oz beeswax per pint of oil heating until
beeswax is melted. This measurement doesn’t have to be exact, but using
too little is better than too much. It will harden as it cools.
Remove from the heat and cool slightly then add a few drops each of grapefruit
seed extract and lavender essential oil. Pour into container and cool.

The first time I made this, I just strained in through a fine mesh strainer, and though that worked, the comfrey root powder still got through so the finished product was a little gritty.

This can be used as a base if you know of other herbs you would like to use. Customize it to your needs.

I hate admitting when this happens. I hate admitting it, but I think I have to.

I am in a rut.

I am stuck in a deep creative rut that has proven difficult to climb out of.

Since at least the beginning of February I have been purging the house. I decided to do it methodically this time. I started in the farthest corner of my house and cleaned/purged until I got to the office. I still have got quite a bit to do in here, but all this cleaning has drained my brain of creative ability.

The sun is shining outside, pulling me away from my dark office.

Too many worries on my mind.

How do you get yourself out of a rut?

Thanks for reading,

In recent months I have come to a realization. The world is way too politically oriented.

As a society, we have made some bad decisions because of
expansion: monoculture, factory farming, factory food. We have thrown away the basic knowledge of
the land and biology. This is not saying
that science can't help, but it has to be hand in hand with the natural order
of things that worked consistently before we started mucking with it. On top of
all that, you have to worry about whose politics you are stepping on when you
start talking about actual issues. Okay,
who cares why the world is getting warmer, it is, ever so slightly, but things
are changing. Let’s take the knowledge
and start to adapt. Let’s make informed
decisions and move on; stop arguing about what caused it.

We look to the government to fix….everything. Somehow we think these individuals who do not
spend their days in the dirt are going to completely understand what it means
to spend your days in the dirt. They don’t
and government never will. We live in an
age where you can say something in the morning and the entire world has read it
by lunchtime. The government cannot help
you. You can help you. You and the guy down the road who is dealing
with the same problem and the community two towns over. The government is always going to make bad decisions. It is bad at healthcare, farming, nutrition,
road maintenance, building things, etc.
Those things are our responsibilities.
It doesn’t matter what political party you belong to. It doesn’t matter who you voted for in the
last election. What matters is that
these things get done. We, as a society,
need to stop waiting around for someone to do everything for us. We let some stranger grow and often cook our
food. We let some stranger tell us how
to heal our bodies. We let some stranger
dictate how to feed our poor. We give
away all of our power to some stranger and then rail at the “way things are”.

built and start over, but unfortunately it doesn’t work that way. We live in a world where everything is about
politics from bees, to marriage, to your MRI results. The actuality of life is being overlooked
because it is not politically viable.
The way we grow and eat food as a society, doesn’t work. It isn’t about your waistline, it is about
the life cycle of a plant that we have forgotten. The way we go to the doctor doesn’t work. It isn’t about your insurance, it is about
the amazing world of human anatomy that we are just now scientifically proving
but that in-tune people have always intuitively known. Take a minute to look at the life around
you. Take a minute to see what problems

will be just fine.

An article was posted in the Seattle Times about the nature
of the northwest native. I will admit it
is a mediocrely written article with a pretentious tone and poorly argued
points but amidst all that is a grain of truth, the idea that sparked the
article to begin with. Though I may be
seeing what I want to see. In amidst the
too many words, I see the notion that us native northwesterners somewhere along
the line came here to be in the woods, to be in the wet, and to be mostly
alone. Oh, and we are fine with
that. Take your noisy politics and go
home, both sides. I will take my silent
forests and running streams, my industry of living off the land and replenishing
said land, I will take my cold mountain air and foggy beaches, wet summers and
sunless winters. I have webbed
feet.

The Puget Sound area used to be industrial, shipping, logging,
fishing, low brow and quiet, maybe a little bit on the smelly side. In the last
decade or two, the area has seen the rise of the tech companies instead of
industrial work, Bellevue has become a big city instead of a dingy beige town,
the I-5 corridor is clogged with cars and Seattle is itself pretentious. The world around here has become very
crowded.

I understand the way the world works, businesses grow and
bring more people and those people bring their ideas and everything is one big
happy melting pot, but I miss my quiet woods. Woods not filled with people in designer
hiking boots clinging to expensive walking sticks and talking about politics or
ecology instead of nothing at all.

The world is changing.
The small towns are being swallowed up everywhere, slowly but surely. The
tied to the land, hard-working roots of it all are dying out, being smothered
by the showy branches of an unknown tree.
That is the grain of truth I saw lingering between the pretentious banter.
That is what struck a chord in this girl who grew up walking through the old
trees, swimming in the cold waters, and listening to the sound of rain with a
smile.

I have always been diligent about my teeth. I was constantly paying attention to my
parents brushing their teeth to see how long they brushed, whether they kept
all the foam in their mouth or spit it out regularly, were they brushing in
circles, up and down, or side to side.
Even with my complete obsession about the right way to brush teeth, I
was still the only kid in the family who got cavities. It was my first visit to a dentist. I was seven.
I was mad. My two older siblings
made excuses why they didn’t brush, or did a quick rush job and then left. I was diligent. This was unfair. I had one full cavity and two sliver cavities
on the sides of my teeth. They were all
filled. I cried during the appointment
because my jaw ached so bad only a short time into the procedure. Luckily this was the only time I would have
to deal with fillings. I don’t believe I
went to the dentist again until I was seventeen. It wasn’t because of fear or avoidance; the
dentist was just something we couldn’t afford.
The cleaning was unremarkable when I went in. The hygienist cleaned my teeth and then the
dentist let me know I had perfect teeth and would never need braces and that
was that. All other visits were about
the same. I never thought there was an alternative to the system of brushing,
flossing and dentist visits.
Looking at the picture is even weirder.

I have always been interested in herbal health and the
natural way of things. When I was pregnant
with my first child, I was working at a health food store, gaining more
knowledge and learning about new ways to do things. I started to look at ingredients and deciding
which ones I could accept and which were too over the top. As the years went on, the list of things I
could accept grew shorter. I finally
looked at the ingredients of my Tom’s Toothpaste and asked myself if toothpaste
was even needed. I did some reading, and
found that toothpaste is for the most part unnecessary. It is the brushing that is helpful. For over a year I ditched the paste. Near Christmas I had some tooth pain and made
an appointment with my dentist to get it checked out, thinking one of my
fillings was loose. He gave my mouth a
clean bill of health and sent me on my way.

It was a few months later that I started noticing a change
in the color of my teeth. There were
discolorations on my front teeth that I didn’t recall. I started to worry about the state of my
teeth and the connection to my health.
This led me down the path of writings by Ramiel Nagel and Weston A.
Price and his followers. The inner scientist in me cringed
at all the assumptions made in the articles I read. I didn’t read it all. I haven't even read Price's book yet, just sections and what Nagel talked about. I read enough to decided that, though I wasn’t
going to delete wheat and beans from our already very whole food diet, I was
going to add cod liver oil, but only the green Carlson bottle kind, not the
fermented paste that is all the rage. I have my reservations about the logic behind fermented cod liver oil, but I will leave that
point for another discussion. My teeth
did start to look better. I still thought
I could be doing more.

it a go. I liked it. My mouth felt clean and minty. Was it doing anything? I didn’t know. I already had a healthy mouth. Around the same time I found an article about
using charcoal to whiten teeth.
Amazingly, the charcoal cleaned the discolorations and proved to me that
they were just stains (most likely coffee and red wine.)

Then my daughter came down with cavities. There were a good five or six of them. All the size of pin pricks. All in baby molars. I was devastated. Was she brushing? No. So I took a bit of time to freak out, thinking about
all the things we could change, and then I calmed down and realized we had some
time to experiment. We talked about how
important it was to brush our teeth and I mixed up some of the new toothpaste
for her to use. She also started on the
cod liver oil. If the toothpaste hadn’t
made a difference, we would have taken other measures, but luckily within a
week the cavities had started to lighted and within a month or so they were barely
noticeable, if at all. I think there is
a bit of staining left over and intend to brush her teeth with charcoal once or
twice to alleviate that.

I have mine in small glass jars, with wood popsicle sticks for scoops (they are actually from Haagen Daz ice cream bars). Scoop some onto your toothbrush and brush as per normal.
September
September always flies by without anything really getting done. I don't know how, but it happens every year. I feel like I am constantly playing catch up; sitting down and falling behind. Then October hits and the fog clears. Life seems to make more sense, but I have to prepare for one of the busiest months in my house. I mean, we have four birthdays and Halloween (which is a medium size holiday for us but still very important).

I have a few goals that I would like to hit by year end. One is to finish the book I have been working on. No, this isn't the awesome story that none of you have heard about because I believe in the mantra that you shouldn't talk about the book you are writing but write it, it is not the cook book that yes is still on my plate and I am hoping to get the rough draft done by 2015, but it is a photography and poetry book that I began putting together in June. Summer was full of show prep and the like, so the book was pushed back in the pile, and then the aforementioned September slump, but after I get the senior portrait session developed and the photographs from my trip to central Washington, I am getting right on that.

I am also going to attempt to build both Etsy shops up to 200 or so items in the next month. Really it is only adding about 50 items to each shop, but it will be a feat to accomplish. Etsy is making a lot of changes that may or may not be good for sellers like me, but for now they are were I am selling, so I am going to put more effort into listing and updating.

I also am going to post more, because why have a blog if you don't write in it. Silly me.

Talk to you soon,

Robin Williams died…killed himself supposedly. This is sad. It is sad because someone died. It is sad because he left behind family. It is to some extent none of my business because I didn't know the man, or his family. I just watch a couple dozen movies and TV shows he acted in. This is more than the death of an actor though. The world wants all of the sad, depressed
people out there to know that they can talk to someone; to the he or she who is
writing the post or article. The news
wants to tell us that there is hope, and to talk to someone. The pseudo-compassionate talk about freedom
and illness. The righteous talk about
choice and sin. The notion that all of
these people who I can only assume have never dealt with clinical depression do not understand, is people
who suffer from depression think differently about the world. We are told our entire lives that we make our
lives more difficult, to smile and be happy, to make the best of a situation and
not always worry about what is to come.
We try. We turn off our minds and
“live in the moment”. In that trying we
are drained. We accept this is
life. We find our ways to cope, some
methods healthier than others. We try to
talk, but the world does not speak the same language. It is not the, “I’m depressed and going to
kill myself” kind of talk, it is just talk.
Trying to find someone who understands what you are saying without
caveats and explanations. Talk therapy doesn’t
work, because we know what you want to hear.
Talk therapy doesn’t work because you don’t have the answers. Only I have the answers. Only I can change, or cope, or deal.

People who get to the point of suicide no longer care. The ability to make decisions has been compromised
by a cloud of uncontrolled emotions, external input and misguided internal
chemical signals. I don’t condone
suicide. I agree that it is selfish. I
also understand how people get there. Depression
is not a disease and it cannot be cured.
It is with you always. When it is at its worst you don’t realize how bad
it is, how off you are thinking, until you are on the other side looking
back. We tell people they can talk it
out, but you can’t. You just have to
learn to live with it. It will never go
away. It is like going to the doctor and
getting a shot. He tells you it is not
going to hurt so you don’t brace yourself, but it hurts like hell. It hurts worse because he told you it wasn’t
going to hurt. Depression is worse these
days because we tell people it will get better. We tell people life doesn’t have to be hard.
We tell them to be happy without knowing what that means. And it hurts so very much more when we
realize that it is all a lie.

A celebrity kills himself and the world is concerned. A northwest mom does the same just last week
and I don’t hear a peep.

When I was in first grade and our family was going through
the tumult of divorce, a lady who worked at the daycare I went to told me “life
sucks, and then you die.” These are
words that bring me an odd sense of comfort. They were some of the most honest
words spoken to me, especially when I was young.

Be honest with people, with your emotions, with your words
and with you deeds. And remember…sometimes
life sucks, but sometimes it doesn’t.

Now off to go buy a copy of Richard Matheson’s What Dreams May Come

Instant Room Décor 8x10 Designer Packs are on sale for $10 This week only!

Looking to start your art photography collection, but not sure exactly how to do it? Looking to fill in that blank wall in your apartment? Ardent Photography has now introduced the 8x10 Grab Bag, a selection of 5 "Random" 8x10 Ardent Art Prints. Great for any room décor, but especially for dorm rooms, first apartments, that new guest room that looks a little bare. Photographs include landscapes, flower close ups, and my everyday objects style.

Why "Random"? The photographs are random-ish. I went through all of the photographs that I put in these envelopes and made sure the colors coordinated and the subjects where complimentary in my opinion, though they may still be completely random to you. They will look lovely in a mosaic on your wall or separate in different rooms.

All photographs are printed on Fuji archival paper by a professional print house with a 1/4 inch border for matting and packaged in a cello envelope with a backer board.

Come on, you know you want one.

11x14 packs are also on sale for $20.

If you want specifically gun art you need to request it. I have only three 8x10 and one 11x14 gun art packs available. If you want a 5x7 or 4x6 gun pack, message me and I will make sure that I have enough to put one together for you.

Since I am getting this out late this week (and because I already have a listing for the design packs), I am going to leave last weeks deal up for 1 more week!

I am not a fan of Western Medicine, this is well known, but
on the same token, I do not believe that there is a conspiracy to make everyone
addicted to prescription drugs and reliant on the system. I cannot believe that an entire system is
filled with people full of “a greed lust for power and money”1 as
put in one article. I am sure that there are horrible people out there in the
medical industry just as there are horrible people everywhere, but when you are
talking about the doctors, the nurses, and the people who deal with sick human
beings every day, I do not think that the majority are “drug pushers” and
willing pawns of a conspiracy. They
truly believe what they are telling you based on the knowledge that they have
acquired. None of us fully understands how
the body works. People accomplish physical
miracles because of sheer will, determination, or something along those
lines. Our knowledge does not included
the whole system.

According to dictionary.com a miracle is “an

Doctors cannot bet on miracles and can only prescribe
what they have physical proof will work.
To be honest, because of these limitations, their ability to heal is imperfect. The amazing thing about the country we live
in, is that we have a choice on who we get to listen to, even if this choice
has been threatened as of late with poorly thought out “health” legislation. I am sending a call out there, to all the
people writing alternative health articles, to stop the mudslinging. Stop playing politics and just inform the
populace. People need facts not emotions. Trust me, if they are sick or trying to stay
healthy, they have plenty of emotions already.

I read an article earlier this week from
Keeper of the Home2, about being ashamed because her child had some
dental issues and needed substantial work done.
I have to admit that when my daughter needed surgery, and I could find
no reasonable alternative, I was ashamed as well. Some of this is because I truly believe in
the body’s ability to heal and thrive without intervention, and I was thumbing
my nose at this belief by turning to surgery, but another part of it, is
because the crunchy community treats western medicine like Satan incarnate. I acknowledge the existence of both science
and spirit. I will not close my eyes to
one in favor of the other. I think people should throw their hatred and judgment
out the window, and put out an open, helping hand.
